Vacations provide me with the chance to slow down. When my mind is relaxed, I can take my time observing the world around me. This observation includes the microscopic world. And, with a Foldscope in my hiking bag, I am always ready to capture those “micro moments.” Read on to find out what I saw on my most recent adventure!

Slowing Down
Our family does a lot of hiking. When we hike, my husband prefers taking pictures that capture the bigger perspective like panoramics of mountain ranges with sweeping views. On the other hand, I find joy in the smaller things. Water droplets on flower petals, insects, patterns on rocks - these things grab my attention. And this works out well because, between the two of us, we get a more complete picture of our experience.

Connecting With Wonder
I love the fact that my family regularly points out things for me to study under my Foldscope - everything from insects to plants to water. They don’t mind waiting for me while I grab a quick sample because they know my Explorer Kit is always ready to go in my bag!

Surprise Discoveries
Because we are usually moving from place to place (hiking isn’t a sedentary hobby!) I collect my samples while we are on the go, saving the actual microscopy for later in the day. The setting for the mobile microscopy lab pictured below was in the hotel lounge.

While my family was relaxing and working on a puzzle, I pulled out my Foldscope! It was great when everyone stopped what they were doing to dive into the microscopic world with me. The sample above contained rotifers, tardigrades, moss, algae, and so much more!

So yes, I enjoy bringing my Foldscope with me while I am on vacation. It is a great way to explore the world and find new things. I also get to share my love of science with others. Watching people react to seeing rotifers and tardigrades swimming around in real time, an experience that most people have never had before, is such a great feeling. You can see some of those videos in this Microcosmos post I recently wrote.
Where have you taken your Foldscope 2.0? Let us know! Share your microscopic images and thoughts on the Microcosmos. Be sure to tag us on social media when you post the results of your explorations, creations, and discoveries! We love to see where Foldscopers around the world are using their Foldscopes in new and innovative ways!
